Helmand Activists To Head To Kabul On Peace Journey

Peace activists from Helmand, known as Helmand peace convoy, arrived in Zabul after an 11-day journey on Friday. They will start their journey to Kabul on Saturday.

The activists were warmly welcomed by residents of Zabul province.

They said they want to carry the message of peace to government and militants and will ask them to agree on a ceasefire and enter peace negotiations.

The peace convoy members met with Zabul residents during their stay in the province.

Some residents of Zabul join their campaign.

“We have four demands: First, the warring parties should announce a ceasefire during Ramadan; second, specify an address (for peace talks), third, establish a joint government, fourth, sit together and fix a date for the withdrawal of ‘foreigners’ (from Afghanistan),” Bacha Khan Mawladad, member of the peace convoy, said.

“I joined the peace convoy from Kandahar, because demands of this campaign are clear and this is what all the people want. They want peace from both sides,” Qais Hashemi, an activist, said.

Zabul residents acknowledged Helmand peace convoy’s move an important step for delivering peace message to government and militants.

“Afghans have been killed for years. No matter to which side they belong, but they all are Afghans,” Majid Khan, a tribal elder from Zabul, said.

The peace convoy was formed after the first sit-in protest was launched in Helmand following a deadly suicide car bombing near Ayub Khan Stadium in Lashkargah City in March, when spectators were leaving a wrestling match. At least 16 people were killed and almost 50 others were wounded in the explosion.

The campaign received support from different provinces.

The main message and demand of the activists is peace and a ceasefire between government and militants.
