Interior Ministry Seizes ‘One Ton Of Drugs A Day’
Officials from the interior ministry on Saturday said they find and seize one ton of drugs in different parts of the country on a daily basis.
Deputy interior minister for counter narcotics Abdul Khalil Bakhtiar said in the last two months they have arrested 700 drug smugglers in over 600 operations.
According to Bakhtiar, over 600 of these smugglers were trying to get drugs out of the country. Bakhtiar said they have seized 68 tons of drugs during this time.
“In Nangarhar’s Khogyani district two laboratories or drug processing factories were destroyed and as result 11 tons of different types of drugs were discovered and seized,” said Bakhtiar.
Afghanistan in terms of drug cultivation and smuggling is at the top of the list among the drug producing countries in the world.
“The volume of drug fields and drug production has increased instead of decreasing. The number of addicts is also increasing day by day,” Gul Mohammad Rasuli, a senator said.
Bakhtiar said the counter narcotics department of the interior ministry was recently included in the security forces’ Nusrat Operation and will try to eradicate poppy fields.
