Interior Ministry Under Fire Over Celebratory Shooting

Residents in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul on Tuesday voiced their anger over widespread shooting into the air on Monday night following the national cricket team’s landslide victory against Zimbabwe in Sharjah.

Kabul residents said the celebratory gunfire, which was reported across the city, sparked enormous fear among the people.

On Monday night, the Afghan cricket team’s spinners trashed Zimbabwe by 146 runs in the fifth and final ODI in Sharjah – to clinch the series 4-1.

Residents however said that the celebratory gunfire caused panic and called on the ministry of interior to crackdown on the practice and arrest those involved.

“When the firing started my small daughter started panicking, we thought there was a huge incident,” said one Kabul resident, Abdul Qadir Mohammadi.

“I don’t understand what the responsibility of the ministry of interior is and why it does not collect illegal arms and these lawbreakers are not referred to the law,” said another resident Mohammad Yasin.

The residents asked Afghan security institutions to make sure that illegal weapons are confiscated.

Meanwhile, the interior ministry’s spokesman Najib Danish said several individuals have been arrested on suspicion of having fired shots off into the air.

“Our assessments show that those who fired were guards of some government officials and friends of some MPs. So far we have arrested ten people,” MoI spokesman Najib Danish said.
