Iran, Afghanistan In Talks Over Prisoner Swap

Iran’s Justice Minister Alireza Avaei on Saturday voiced his satisfaction on cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan on extradition of prisoners between Iran and Afghanistan, according to Iran’s IRNA news agency report.

“Good cooperation has been made in this regard,” Avaei said.

Speaking after a meeting with his Afghan counterpart Abdul Baseer Anwar in Tehran, Avaei said that about 5,000 Afghans are in prison in Iran – mostly on drug-related charges.

IRNA also reported that about 22 Iranians are serving prison in Afghanistan.

During the meeting, Afghan deputy justice minister for human rights and international affairs Mahmoud Abbasi said that some 650 Afghan prisoners were extradited to Afghanistan over the past two years. 

Accoridng to IRNA, Abbasi said that the two countries were facing challenges in extraditing prisoners which would be solved if they refer to the treaties between the two states. 

The two delegations signed a judicial cooperation agreement at the end of the meeting.
