Iraqi Embassy Siege Ends After Attackers Killed

At least four Daesh insurgents launched an attack on the Iraqi Embassy in Kabul city on Monday morning in the Ansari area of the city.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) said in a statement that three attackers were killed by security forces after a gunfight that lasted almost four hours.

The MoI said that “one policeman was wounded in the attack.”

“No embassy staff members were hurt in the attack. The security forces rescued the ambassador, deputy ambassador and other staff and took them to a safe place,” the MoI said.

According to the MoI, a suicide bomber first detonated explosives near the entrance to the embassy. At least three others then stormed the compound.

One source said the insurgents were wearing police uniforms when they launched the attack.

The attack started in PD4 at about 11.10am local time. The gunfight between the insurgents and security forces ended shortly before 3pm.

“First a suicide bomber detonated his explosives close to the gate of the embassy then three other insurgents entered inside the compound,” a statement said.

Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack comes a week after at least 35 people were killed in a Taliban suicide attack on a Ministry of Mine’s bus in Kabul.
