Officials Say Kabul Ring Road Construction to Start Soon

Noor Gul Mangal, the Acting Minister of Public Works, has said that early stage surveying and design for a ring road around Kabul are complete and the construction phase will soon begin.

The ring road will be built thanks to financial aid from the Asian Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank. The beltway-styled road is expected to improve commercial transit, security and congestion in the capital, because it will allow through traffic and freight vehicles circumvent the city instead of having to pass straight through it.

The Kabul ring road will be 95 KM long, starting from Chahar Asyab area and moving toward Arzan Qeemat, then passing through Mahipar to New Kabul in the Deh Sabz area. The road will connect to Qalaye Murad Beg in northern Kabul and then to Paghman, from which it will then loop back to the Chahar Asyab area.

"A feasibility review has already been done, and the construction of the road will cost 300 million USD, because this road has six lanes and there are road breaks at many parts of the road, which is needed along with bridges and ditches," Acting Minister Mangal said.

Analysts have heralded the new road project as a major step for public infrastructure in the capital. "If this road is built, you will witness a great decrease in the traffic rush of Kabul, and the environmental conditions will improve as well," Kabul Polytechnic University Nazerr Ahmad Nejabi told TOLOnews. "Finally, it will also positively impact the transit system of Afghanistan."
