Over 70 Security Force Members Killed in Past 24 Hours: Sources

Government sources said on Wednesday that over 70 security force members have been killed and dozens more wounded in battles on several fronts around the country including Baghlan, Zabul and Kandahar provinces over the past 24 hours.

A police source in Baghlan said that at least 35 Afghan National Army (ANA) officers and ten policemen were killed when the Taliban launched an attack on a military base in Baghlan-e-Markazi district.

The Taliban launched the attack on Tuesday night on Allawuddin Base in Baghlan-e-Markazi district which resulted in the killing of at least 35 ANA officers and ten police personnel, said the police source.

“Problems exist inside Afghanistan, there should be better coordination between the security forces and the international forces and they should prevent such attacks,” said MP Mirdad Khan Nejrabi.

Zabul and Kandahar provinces have also witnessed fierce battles during this period.

The head of Zabul provincial council said that the Taliban launched an attack on an army check post in Qalat city overnight.

“The Taliban attacked an army base in Khazi area, over 400 Taliban took part, our soldiers retaliated very bravely and casualties among the opponents were much higher than the government forces,” said Atta Jan Haqbayan, head of Zabul provincial council.

“Our countrymen last week witnessed events that can be remembered as a national tragedy,” said CEO Abdullah Abdullah in reference to the high casualty toll.

“What is this national security council really doing, the security council is supposed to sit and observe, these issues must be discussed in the security meetings and cabinet meetings,” said General Sikandar Asghari, a former deputy head of the Afghan Local Police directorate.

Security sources in Kandahar, a province in southern Afghanistan, have said that the Taliban launched an attack on police forces in Arghandab on Tuesday which resulted in the death of over 18 Taliban fighters and 13 police personnel.

According to security officials, over 100 security force members were killed during the recent Taliban attack on Ghazni.
