Over 900,000 Register But Turnout Still Slow

An election commissioner said voter registration turnout was still slow, and that Afghans do not appear interested in participating in the process.

The commissioner said that more than 900,000 individuals have registered so far, but according to him, the process might be extended if the turnout stays as it is.

“The issue that people participated in the last elections but did not get the expected results has affected people’s interest in the process. Or it is possible that the representatives they elected have not done their jobs. Another reason is that the distribution of paper identity cards was not started based on the plan shared with us,” Maazullah Dawlati, an Independent Election Commission (IEC) member, told TOLOnews on Thursday.

President Ashraf Ghani, who attended a ceremony to mark the launch on Thursday of the electronic National Identity Cards, also known as e-NIC, meanwhile called on the people to “take elections seriously”.

“Government should be firm regarding the people’s will. We must hold elections in order to determine our future,” Ghani said.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah said at another event the lack of the Presidential Palace’s attention to the National Unity Government’s agreement “is the reason behind a delay in elections” which he believed affected people’s confidence in the process.

“If we solved the issue at that time I think we would not have this crisis with political parties,” Abdullah said.

The upcoming parliamentary and district council elections are scheduled to be held in October.
