Three Iranians Arrested In Herat On Charges Of Murder

Anti-terror police chief for western Herat province, Fazlur Rahman Khadim, on Monday said at a press conference that police had arrested three Iranian citizens on charges of murder, terrorist activities and providing supplies to other terrorists.

Khadim said the men used Afghan identity cards and were involved in a number of killings in the province.

According to Khadim, two pistols were seized from the suspects and one of the weapons was used in the shooting death of a Herat citizen.

“We arrested two men who first introduced themselves as Afghans, but later we found they are Iranian and originally come from Mashhad city in Iran. Two of the suspects, Majid son of Hussain, and Ramazan, son of Hussain, are from Mashhad, and the third one’s name is Wahid. He was arrested in a separate operation.”

Khadim also said a number of Taliban commanders who carry out terrorist activities in Herat own houses in Iran.

“There are terrorist groups in Guzara district of Herat province (and they) have houses and safe havens in Iran,” he added.

A number of civil society activists in the province meanwhile said government must take steps to stop such terrorist groups and discuss the issue with the Iranian government.

“Government should discuss the issue with Iran’s government. Until the issue is solved through political talks, such activities will continue in the province,” said Shafiq Behrozian, a civil society activist.

Herat residents also urged government to take action against such groups.

“Herat police always said Iran has a hand in terrorist activities in Herat, but central government did not accept that. Now that Iranian citizens have been arrested on charges of carrying out terrorist activities, the presidential palace must take action in this respect,” said Shekib, a Herat resident.
