Reasons For Afghanistan Situation Are Manifold: Qureshi

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Tuesday said that they believe that the reasons for the Afghan situation are manifold."

"We all saw that right before the current government elected, a new US policy was announced and in it, Pakistan was primarily blamed for the situation in Afghanistan. Our point of view is completely opposite to that,” Qureshi told reporters on Tuesday.

"We believe that the reasons for the Afghan situation are manifold. The internal situation within Pakistan plays a great role in their regional situation,” he said. “Furthermore, we kept saying and now the world has seen that Pakistan has made huge efforts on our side of the border and cleansed our own areas.”

“We have restored peace there and started reconstruction there, because of which, a number of people that had to repatriate from there have started returning to their homes,” he added.

In the meantime, Pakistan’s Khan who visited United State and met with Trump said that he will meet with the Taliban after returning to Islamabad and that he will get the group to the negotiation table with the Afghan government.

“Taliban delegation wanted to meet me few months back… It is because I always maintained that there was no military solution [to the war in Afghanistan],” Khan said at the US Institute of Peace.

He said that the Taliban “wanted to meet him but the Afghan government at that point did not want him to meet the group.

Khan’s comments come as the US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Kabul on Tuesday.
