Red Cross Hostage Confirmed To Be Spanish National

The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) staff member kidnapped on the Kunduz-Balkh Highway is reportedly a Spanish national.

A credible source told TOLOnews the hostage is a male.

Red Cross officials said the employee was kidnapped on Monday when a group of staff members were travelling in two vehicles from Mazar-e-Sharif city of Balkh province to Kunduz (province).

One male colleague was taken and the rest were let go, the organization said.

“We are extremely concerned for the safety of our colleague. We are doing our best to discover what precisely happened, and to secure his safe and unconditional release as quickly as possible," ICRC's head of delegation in Afghanistan, Monica Zanarelli said.

“The ICRC is in contact with various officials so that we can ensure the safe release of our colleague,” ICRC spokesman Ahmad Ramin Ayaz said.

“They were taken towards Khan Abad [district]. The intelligence services officials are working in this respect,” Kunduz police chief Qasim Jangal Bagh said.

This comes after senior Taliban figures confirmed on Tuesday they had released a new video appearing to show a kidnapped American-Canadian family, including two young boys born in captivity while held by the feared Haqqani network.
