Residents Of Numerous Cities Concerned About Security

Amid rising concerns by residents of Gardez, Kunduz, Ghazni, Farah and Maimana cities on the possible collapse of these areas to the Taliban, the Ministry of Defense said their concerns are real and need to be taken seriously.

The Defense Ministry spokesman said the concerns have been shared with US forces in the country and that the American troops are ready to assist in case of any movement by the Taliban.

“These concerns have been shared with our international friends. They have considered air support for us in case of need,” said Ghafoor Ahmad Jawed, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense.

Some residents of Farah and Kunduz provinces said they are concerned about their safety.

“We are worried about the situation. We are worried about militants’ attacks,” said Abdul Rahman, a civil society activist.

“The situation in Farah is concerning. We d not feel safe neither during the day nor at night,” said Mohammad Amin, a resident of Farah.

“There are rumors that Kunduz will be attacked anytime by the Taliban, but no one takes this concern seriously,” said Amruddin Wali, a member of Kunduz Provincial Council.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior Affairs said they have enough troops to thwart the threats by militants.

“We deploy our forces based on assessments and recommendations of our military experts,” said Najib Danish, a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior Affairs.

A military analyst, Miagul Khalid, meanwhile talked about the reason why the situation has been provided for looming threats against centers of five other strategic provinces in the country.

“US’s strategy is changing. It has changed many times. We need attention to diplomacy besides war issues,” Khalid said.

This comes after local officials in Farah and Gardez said the cities are under serious threat by militants in recent weeks.

The governor of Faryab says Taliban militants are posing a serious threat to the province and that Maimana City is surrounded by militants.

The northern province has witnessed many clashes between government forces and Taliban in recent weeks.

The governor, Naqibullah Fayiq, said civilian aircraft are also not flying into the province, and have not done so for a year due to increased security threats against the airport.

He also said that development projects have stopped in the province.

Paktia officials warned on Tuesday of a planned Taliban attack against Gardez city.

Provincial police chief Raz Mohammad Mandozai said that Taliban were planning to conduct a group attack on the city and that security had been tightened up.

However, he raised concerns over not having enough security forces in the city.
