Surgery Enabled Girl Walk After 15 Years

A successful operation by a doctor and his colleagues in Kabul’s Istiqlal hospital has enabled a girl to walk after 15 years.

The girl, Fatima, from Daikundi province. Her foot was attached to her thigh when she was born and caused her not to be able to walk.

The foot was attached to her leg as a result of severe burning.

After 15 years, Fatima’s family brought her to Kabul and the doctor successfully performed the operation, now she can walk.

According to the doctor, the operation took five hours and he, along with his colleagues, was able to separate her foot from her thigh.

According to the surgeon, it was the first operation of its kind being in Afghanistan.

“After the surgery, her foot bone was short about by 10cm. It is because her foot was attached for 15 years and had not grown as it should have. Through bone surgery, this also can be treated,” Ahmad Shah Wazir, burn and plastic surgeon in Istiqlal hospital said.

Fatima says now she is very happy that she can walk, and she will attend school after returning to her home province.

“I passed 15 years with numerous problems. I was unable to walk and always needed someone’s help. I was unable to go to school. Now I am happy that my foot is treated, and I can walk. I will take the first steps to school,” Fatima said.

Fatima’s uncle wife, Shafiqa, said Fatima’s family did not expect that their daughter would walk one day.

“A few days ago, her mother came from Daikundi and when she saw her walking, she became very happy. Her father has not seen her walking yet,” Shafiqa said.

Istiqlal hospital doctors said they are able to carry out complicated burns surgeries, but there is not enough equipment and devices in the hospital.
