Surkh Rod Residents Concerned About Growing Insecurity

Surkh Road residents, from Nangarhar province, have voiced their concern over growing insecurity in their once safe district, saying Taliban activity has increased dramatically in the past two years.

According to the residents, security has noticeably deteriorated in the area, which is close to Jalalabad city, the provincial capital.

They said government must take serious action to reinstall security in the area.

“During the day government controls the area and at night they (Taliban) come in. We cannot go far from our houses and when there is a sick person, we cannot take him or her to Jalalabad city,” Ajmal, a resident of the district, said.

“Taliban come to these areas and leave. Operations should be launched to safeguard people’s lives,” Fakhar Alam, another resident said.

Nangarhar provincial council meanwhile warned of insecurity expansion in the area and said if Taliban expands its activities in the district, Jalalabad city will also become insecure.

“We have repeatedly asked the local and security departments to launch operations in the district that located near the city (Jalalabad) or in places that is needed, but no operations have been conducted in these areas,” Obaidullah Shinwari, a member of the council said.

Surkh Rod governor, Ali Akbar Sadat, confirmed security had deteriorated and said Taliban recently started activities in parts of the district.

“We have sent our suggestions to high-ranking officials and if our demands are met, I assure that the Surkh Rod will become secure one hundred percent,” said Sadat.

Surkh Rod residents said they are extremely concerned about this as in the past they had lived peacefully in the area.
