Taliban In Favor Of Prolonging The War: Govt

In reaction to Taliban representatives’ refusal in not meeting government's negotiating team in Abu Dhabi, Presidential Palace on Friday said Taliban is in favor of prolonging the war in Afghanistan and that their unwillingness to meet President Ghani’s team shows that the group does not have a will for peace.

Taliban and US officials held talks in Abdu Dhabi for two days where they discussed issues around peace in Afghanistan. While a 12-member delegation from the Afghan government was in Abu Dhabi for three days to hold meeting with the Taliban, but representatives of the group reportedly refused to meet Ghani’s team.

“Taliban made this unexpected move and rejected the legitimate demand of the Afghan people and the international community,” Presidential Palace said in a statement late on Thursday. “They showed that they do not want welfare in the region and are not committed to peace and want the war to continue. This move is a political defeat for the Taliban,” the statement added.

In a statement on December 19, Taliban said that the Abu Dhabi talks were held between US and Taliban representatives and that representatives of three other countries also attended the meeting.

The statement said that withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan was main part of the talks. The statement added that the Taliban delegation asked for a halt in “bombardments against civilians” and meanwhile humanly treatment with prisoners and their exchange were also discussed in the meeting.

“If the security agreement between Kabul and Washington is canceled and the parliament approves it, then for sure Taliban will talk with the Afghan government and politicians. But this move (cancellation of the agreement) is above government's ability,” said Nazar Mohammad Mutmaen, a political affairs analyst.

“All these issues depend to the stances of the powers who manage Afghanistan's political situation,” said Hamid Hatam, a political affairs analyst.

Meanwhile, Shahzada Massoud, an advisor to former president Hamid Karzai, who was present in a meeting between the US special envoy Khalilzad and Afghan political leaders on Thursday, said the US representative still wants a national consensus to be created on negotiations with the Taliban.

“A national team which will represent all the Afghan people should be formed and should work for inra-Afghan talks,”Massoud said.

Some Kabul residents meanwhile said it was better if Taliban would have met the Afghan government’s team in UAE.

“If we think on cancellation of security agreement because of peace, then what is the guarantee that peace will come,”  Noorwali, a Kabul resident, said.

“Currently, we cannot cancel the security agreement, because government and security forces need that agreement,” sais Fawad, a Kabul resident.
