In defiance to the international pressure, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that he officially recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
He described the move as "a long overdue step" to advance the Middle East peace process.
The US leader said his country would support a two-state solution, if approved by both the Israelis and the Palestinians.
“Israel is a sovereign nation with the right, like every other sovereign nation, to determine its own capital.” He said.

Ahead of the decision, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned it would have "dangerous consequences" for the region.
