Ukraine to Increase Number of Troops in Afghanistan

Ukraine will increase the number of its troops in the NATO-led Operation Resolute Support in Afghanistan from 11 to 29 people according to a Ukraine Inform report.

The head of the Directorate for Cooperation with NATO of the Government Office for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Oleksiy Henchev said this during a round table discussion "What Should Ukraine Expect from the NATO Summit in Brussels (2018)?" in Kyiv on Tuesday, according to the report.

"Ukraine in NATO is represented in the KFOR mission in Kosovo and in Resolute Support in Afghanistan - 40 servicemen in Kosovo and 11 in Afghanistan. But there is a decision to increase the contingent in Afghanistan by 18 people - there will be 29," he said.

According to Henchev, the increase in the number of Ukrainian troops in the NATO mission in Afghanistan is "not just a political signal," but it also gives Ukrainian soldiers experience and strengthens the operational ability to carry out combat missions in eastern Ukraine.

Currently, there are about 15,000 foreign troops from 39 different countries in the Resolute Support Mission.
