A US service member has been killed in Afghanistan, Resolute Support said Tuesday in a statement.

"One US service member was killed in Afghanistan today as a result of enemy small arms fire," according to a brief statement late Tuesday night from Resolute Support, the NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan.

The identity of the soldier has not been released.

In accordance with Defense Department policy, "the name of the service member killed in action is being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete," read the statement.

It is the second US military soldier killed in Afghanistan in a week and this year.

Army Sgt. Cameron Meddock died last week at a medical facility in Germany after being wounded by small arms fire on January 13 during an operation in Badghis province.

Meddock, 26, of Amarillo, Texas, was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.

The US has approximately 14,000 troops in Afghanistan with the majority of them serving in non-combat roles as part of the NATO-led train, advise and assist mission.

A smaller number of US Special Operations Forces participate in counterterrorism missions.
