Bamiyan Hosts Traditional Harvest Festival

A traditional harvest festival titled Potato Blossom Festival was held in the central province of Bamiyan on Thursday with the participation of high ranking government officials including the minister of agriculture Assadullah Zamir.

Addressing the event, Zamir said the ministry would build more cold storage facilities for Bamiyan.

“This year, we have planned to build 14 small freezer stocks for potato, three small dams to control the waters and distribute three water pump system,” Zamir said.

According to him, the ministry has inaugurated more than 800 small and medium storage facilities in the province.

“We must boost the markets for Bamiyan potatoes in international level. The hard work of the Bamiyan farmers are connected with this issue,” Bamiyan governor Mohammad Tahir Zuhair.

A number of MPs from Bamiyan asked government to support the market for Bamiyan potatoes.

“In most parts of Bamiyan, there is enough water to increase potato products,” said Akbar Ahmadi, an MP.

Bamiyan farmers said that lack of market for their products is the main problem for their business.

“We have enough agricultural facilities, but new we need more stocks for potatoes. The season of potatoes has reached at a time which is not suitable. For instance, if other people sell it for 180 AFs or 200 AFs per seven kilograms, we sell the same amount for 60 AFs or 70 AFs,” said Mohammad Alam, a farmer in the province.

“We have sold potatoes in a low price over the past ten years. We do not have any other income source. I requested for a potato stock five years ago, but we failed to get it due to corruption (in public offices). Those who have money can get the stock,” said Janan, a farmer in Bamiyan.

Bamiyan has famous reputation in potato production in Afghanistan. More than 60 percent of overall needs of the country to potatoes comes from this province.
