Herat Rappers Hold Concert To Stop ‘Humiliation’

A number of rap artists from Herat province on Monday held a street concert to protest against the treatment meted out by members of the public.

The concert, entitled “Voice of Freedom”, provided a platform for the musicians to raise their concerns. They said people did not have to listen to their music but then they should in turn not insult them because of it.

“These people have gathered here today to listen to our concert. Rap means objecting, rap means telling an objection. Rap is our world and (people) should consider us and pay attention to rap,” rapper Murtaza said.

“In our rap (music) there are poems for love and sometimes there are political poems,” rapper Majid said.

The concert however did not draw many people but the few that were there said they love to listen to rap music.

“In Afghanistan mostly other types of music are more famous, but rap also has lots of fans and I hope more people show an interest in it,” Nilofar, a resident of Herat said.

A rapper, Farzad, said he started rapping when he was 16 years old. According to him, rap is a form of music that talks to people and can be a voice to protest against injustice and inequalities in society.

“We want to add good color to the situation that we live in. We aimed to carry a message to those who do not listen (to rap). It is not something that I say, people say it,” said Farzad.
