Watchdogs and senators said Kabul election results have been delayed due to secret deals between IEC and some candidates.
‘Secret Deals Between IEC, Candidates Delay Election Results’
A number of institutions overseeing the election process and a number of members of the Meshrano Jirga (the Upper House of Parliament) on Friday said due to "secret deals" between the election commission and a number of candidates, Kabul election results' announcement have been postponed.
According to election watchdogs and senators, the secret deals not only have postponed preliminary results of Kabul elections, but also delayed the announcement of final results of the October 20 and 21 parliamentary elections.
“There are some things we have received information about, that by prolonging the process, some financial corruption occurred. This is worrying to us as well,” Marwa Amini, spokesperson of Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan said.
“Widespread fraud and poor management in holding the Kabul elections has caused them (IEC) not to conclude the process so far,” Abdullah Qaraloq, a senator said.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) meanwhile said they are waiting for the Independent Electoral Complaint Commission (IECC) to complete its assessments. “Based on the law, it is the responsibility of IECC to finish its assessments on elections' complaints and hand over (the results) to us and we should announce the final results as soon as possible,” Sayed Hafizullah Hashemi, a commissioner of IEC said.
However, Ali Reza Rouhani, spokesman of IECC said, “We have finalized 12 provinces and ready to be implemented in the IEC. Then, in another phase by the end of the next week, (complaints of) another 10 provinces also will be finalized.”
Based on the elections law and schedule, IECC should finish assessments of complaints in one month following the announcement of preliminary results. But in some provinces, over one and half months have passed since the preliminary results announcement and the complaints assessments are yet to be completed.
The election commission has said that it will announce Kabul election results in the next week.
