ARG Receives List Of Nominees For IEC Secretariat

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) has sent a list of names of 13 nominees for the position of head of secretariat of the electoral body to the Presidential Palace.

The commission said it will also appoint six professional election advisors in the near future.

“The Independent Election Commission has sent a list to the Presidential Palace. Government will introduce an individual which is eligible for the secretariat position,” said Shahussain Murtazawi, deputy spokesman for President Ashraf Ghani.

“There are some eligible persons in the list. But we are concerned about political dimensions of this matter,” said Yusuf Rashid, CEO of Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the former vice president Mohammad Yunus Qanooni said he is worried about wide-scale election fraud in the next polls.

“We all believe that fraud could happen. The result of fraud is not acceptable this time,” he said.

Ghani’s former special envoy on reforms and good governance Ahmad Zia Massoud meanwhile stressed the need for a transparent election in the country.

“The country will face a crisis if fraud happens this time. The best solution is the establishment of a government which is acceptable for all through a transparent election in order to address the country’s political problem,” he said.

The parliamentary and district council elections will be held in October.
