Ex-director general of the Center for Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Faramarz Tamanna, accompanied by his wife Arezou Nooristani, and running mates Sayed Qiyas Saeedi and Mohammad Amin Rishadat on Thursday officially announced his bid for July 20 presidential elections. Tamanna is the seventh candidate to enter the race, while other powerful nominees are expected to register in the next few days.

Sayed Qiyas Saeedi and Mohammad Amin Rishadat respectively will run as Tamanna’s running mates for first and second vice presidents. Both have academic backgrounds and teach at university.

Tamanna has entered the race with the slogan 'Initiative and Development'. 

“I hope that the Initiative and Development team will be able to fill this vacuum. There is a specialized, committed and a native team fully capable with modern knowledge of the world to lead the government,” Tamanna told reporters at the IEC after registering as a presidential hopeful.

Biography:

Dr Faramarz Tamanna served as director general of the Center for Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Afghanistan, and chancellor of the University of Afghanistan in Kabul. He holds a PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi, India) in international studies and also from Tehran University in international relations.

Tamanna has previously worked as deputy spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has held other positions in Afghan diplomatic missions abroad. He has taught at several universities as well.

Tamanna’s first running mate Sayed Qiyas Saeedi was born 1974 in Chaparhar district of eastern Nangarhar. Saeedi pursued his primary and secondly education in Peshawar and continued his higher education in economy at Nangarhar University in Jalalabad city. Saeedi has also written a number of books on economic development and taught at several universities in the country.

Tamanna’s second running mate Dr Mohammad Rishadat was born in 1975 in Ghazni province. He holds a PhD in sociology and social change from Shiraz University in Iran. Rishadat has taught at various universities in the country for almost a decade.

Tamanna is the seventh candidate to enter the race alongside Abdul Latif Pedram, Noorul-haq-Ulumi, Sayed Noorullah Jalili, Enayatullah Hafiz, Zalmay Rassoul and Abdul Hakim Torsan.

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) said, so far, 73 people have received information packages for the elections and there would be more candidates entering the race in the next few days.

“We expect all candidates who want run in the presidential elections to consult the elections commission by the end of the month,” said IEC deputy spokesman, Zabiullah Sadat.

Afghanistan’s presidential elections will be held on July 20 2019.
