IEC Set To Announce Election Results For 10 Provinces

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) said on Thursday the preliminary results of parliamentary elections for 10 provinces will be announced on Friday.

The commission said the results that will be announced are from provinces which sent in election material earlier than other provinces.

The commission was expected to announce the results two weeks ago, but the announcement was delayed at least twice.

“We will continue our efforts to finalize the primary results of the 10 provinces by tomorrow so that they can be shared with you,” said Sayed Zabihullah Sadat, a spokesman for the IEC.

Meanwhile, some Kabul-based electoral monitoring organizations said that the election crisis will deepen if transparency is not ensured throughout the entire process.

“We welcome this but in the meantime we have our concerns regarding the lack of documents for some candidates and political parties who have complaints,” said Yusuf Rasheed, CEO of Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan.

“There were many problems. The recounting procedure was not done properly by the election commission and the complaints commission’s officials,” said Hasib Shinwari, a member of Electoral Watch Afghanistan.

According to the IEC, votes cast in some provinces including parts of Balkh, Kandahar, Badakhshan and Kabul are being recounted and reassessed as a result of complaints lodged against them.

The deputy speaker of Meshrano Jirga, the Upper House of the Parliament, Mohammad Alam Ezedyar, said a transparent election is the only way out of the current crisis in the country.

“No one and no group will be able to govern in Afghanistan without the participation of the people of Afghanistan,” Ezedyar said.

The parliamentary elections were held on October 20 and 21 across the country except Kandahar and Ghazni provinces.
