IECC Task Team Drops 25 Names From Candidates’ List

The committee of the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC), assigned for investigation of possible links of some candidates with illegal armed groups, said Friday that 25 names have been dropped from the parliamentary elections candidates’ list, one member of the committee said.

The committee ended its task late on Thursday night.

Abdul Basir Faiz, member the committee, said seven other possible candidates received notices and 27 others received warring that if they are proved to have links with irresponsible gunmen, they will be removed from the final list.

Faiz said the 25 candidates can file their objections to the Electoral Complaints Commission on Friday and Saturday.

The Electoral Complaints Commission has received 500 complaints on possible parliamentary candidates.

Officials from Integrity Watch Afghanistan (IWA) have welcomed the move by the IECC’s special committee to crackdown on controversial candidates.

In addition, a number of political parties and political movements have said that the IECC has dealt politically with some of the candidates.

The IECC is expected to disqualify candidates who are involved in security issues, coordinated crimes, drug smuggling, and misuse of public and private assets.
