Sayed Noorullah Jalili registered on Thursday as the third candidate who will run as president in Afghanistan’s upcoming presidential elections scheduled on July 20.

There is no other option to improve the current situation of the country, Jalili told media after completing his registration as presidential candidate at the Independent Election Commission (IEC).

The IEC meanwhile said it expects more personalities to register as presidential candidates next week.

Jalili has picked Khalil Roman as his first vice president and Cheragh Ali Cheragh as second vice president.

Jalili said that if he secures office of the president in the elections, he will take solid programs towards reviving Afghanistan’s deteriorating security and will improve the national economy.

“The people of Afghanistan should cast their votes with responsibility and give votes to a person who can bring Afghanistan out of the current situation. Coalition governments and transitional government is not acceptable at any cast. We don’t want to move to the past, we have to move forward,” he said.

Abdul Latif Pedram, an MP from Badakhshan and head of Afghanistan National Congress Party, was the first to register for this year’s presidential elections.

Mohammad Hakim Torsan was the second candidate to register.

Torsan ran in 2009 and in 2014 presidential elections. He withdrew in 2009 ahead of starting his campaign, but he did not succeed in receiving adequate votes in 2014 elections.

The IEC says at least 73 possible candidates, including President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, have received information packages from the commission.

“We have received information that a number of political and Jihadi figures will come to register ahead of elections,” said Abdul Aziz Ibrahimi, deputy IEC spokesman.

The upcoming presidential elections are scheduled for July 20.

According to IEC, the registration process will continue until January 20.

Jalili said the people of Afghanistan should cast their votes with responsibility to bring country out of its present situation.
