A number of parliamentary election candidates on Sunday accused “local lawbreakers” in Baghlan province of fraud in support of their favorite candidates in the October 20 polls.

The protesting candidates said that at least 25 polling stations remained closed in the province on the elections day.

“We saw the interview of the provincial head of the election commission in which he clearly said that elections in Tala Wa Barfak district were not acceptable and the votes which from the district are invalid,” said Azizurrahman Sakhizada, a candidate from Baghlan.

“Fraud was reported not only in Tala Wa Barfak but also in Baghlan-e-Markazi, some areas of Pul-e-Khumri city and other districts,” said Humaira Kohzad, a candidate from Baghlan.

Meanwhile, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) said the election management body will probe reports of ballot stuffing in the province.

“If there are cases of misuse or there are people who consult lawmakers and conduct meetings for bribery and corruption, please inform the intelligence institutions,” said IEC spokesman Sayed Hafizullah Hashemi.

The Hizb-e-Islami leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar who addressed a press conference in Kabul on Sunday, made remarks on elections and accused the IEC of being involved in “corruption and fraud”.

Hekmatyar said all non-biometric votes should be declared invalid. He added that that his party’s candidates got majority of votes in parliamentary elections.

“Despite fraud in the elections, Hizb-e-Islami candidates have got one-third of votes in recent parliamentary elections,” Hekmatyar said.

Protesting candidates said the head of Independent Election Commission (IEC) in Baghlan has also confirmed ballot stuffing in the province.
