The Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) on Wednesday said most of the complaints filed so far are related to the shortcomings by the Independent Election Commission (IEC) on the day of elections.

There are numerous complaints about the problems around the voter lists, said IECC deputy chief Humaira Haqmal, pledging that the IECC will investigate all complaints.

She also said that legal action will be taken against those who are found guilty for the inefficiencies during the elections.

According to Hamal, if the IEC had issued the voter lists a day before the elections, people would not have been deprived of casting their votes.

“They (IEC) did not publish the lists, unfortunately the majority of the complaints are related to the lists, the majority of the people affected were due to the voter list problem. Again we are accused that the Afghans couldn’t manage it well,” said Haqmal.

In response the IEC chief Abdul Badi Sayyad said: “We can confirm that there were some shortcomings, all these problems will be assessed authentically and seriously.”

Meanwhile, some former IEC officials have also said that the IEC officials failed to organize the elections professionally.

“The (IEC) officials will implement the elections with all the shortcomings we have if all violations and irregularities are investigated. Legal action should be taken against all those employees who are guilty of violating the law or committed work negligence,” said former IEC chief Fazel Ahmad Manavi.

Meanwhile, former president Hamid Karzai in an interview with VOA has said that it would have been better not to conduct the elections in view of the current situation in the country.

“It was better if it had not been held,” said Karzai.
