Paktia Officials Blast IEC Over Election Chaos in Province

Governor of Paktia province Shamim Khan Katawazai on Monday sharply criticized the provincial Independent Election Commission officials over poor management in the province saying that a large number of people have not voted.

Katawazai said in the two days of elections, there were lots of challenges and irregularities, especially on the first day - Saturday.

“There were problems with the voter lists and people’s names were not there. Also there were problems with the biometric system,” said Katawazai.

Election commission officials in Paktia province meanwhile said there were challenges and shortcoming in the province adding that that they tried to manage the process well.

Aminullah Fazli, head of the election commission office in Paktia, said all ballot boxes have been transferred from the districts to the provincial center.

“There were problems in some districts, not in all the province. Our employees were beaten by local powerful men and they forcefully took the ballot boxes and in some districts our employees were not let in,” Fazli said.

Security officials in the south-east parts of the country meanwhile said Taliban had plans to disrupt elections in the south-east, but they did not let the group carry out their plans.

“Those who were negligent in doing their jobs or have interfered in elections have been acted against,” Raz Mohammad Mandozai, Paktia police chief said.

203 Tandar Military Corps say security forces prevented 123 attacks by the Taliban in Paktia, Paktika, Khost and Maidan Wardak provinces over election period.

“With the help of people and Resolute Support forces we were able to neutralize all plans of the enemy,” General Dadan Lawang, commander of the military corps said.
