Major political parties and movements on Monday said the Independent Election Commission (IEC) is not capable of holding credible presidential elections.

They called on government to bring inclusive reforms within the election management body.

The parties said they have decided to support a candidate in the presidential elections who will promise to change the election system in the country.

“The issues which we saw around the parliamentary elections show the failure and inefficiency of the election commission; therefore, the political parties and civil society institutions and even government believes that the commission cannot convene the elections in a successful manner with its present capacity,” said Humayun Jarir, member of the political committee of the political parties and movements.

The parties called on judicial institutions to investigate "large-scale fraud" in the parliamentary elections.

“Fraud is a crime. Those who commit fraud or are accused of commiting fraud should be sent to judicial institutions as soon as possible,” said Assadullah Saadati, member of the political committee of the political parties.

Meanwhile, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) said it will use all available resources to hold the elections.

According to the IEC, 40 people have received information packages for running as president in the next year’s presidential elections.

“So far, no one has officially filled nomination papers,” said Mirza Mohammad Haqparast, deputy spokesman for IEC.

A spokesman of the Independent Election Commission says they will leave no stone unturned to hold "credible elections".
