RS Says NATO Will Remain Neutral During Elections

The Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan (RS) on Sunday said NATO will play no role in Afghanistan’s October 20 parliamentary elections and will remain neutral.

RS spokesman Colonel Knut Peters made the remarks at a joint press conference in Kabul with the spokesmen of the ministries of interior and defense. Together they briefed media on maintaining election security.

Peters said Resolute Support is in Afghanistan to support the Afghan government in reaching peace adding the upcoming parliamentary elections will be decided by the Afghan people.

“I would like to emphasize that NATO will remain strictly impartial in the elections next Saturday. NATO will not play a role at all. The whole elections process, at all stages, is and will remain in the hands of your fellow-countrymen and women from the initial plan to the final results,” Peters said.

Interior and defense ministries’ spokesmen meanwhile said they have tightened security measurements to ensure security of the elections.

The spokesmen said that on election day, three security belts will be created at each polling center to ensure voters’ safety.

“Security forces will be stationed in three security belts to maintain elections security. In the first belt which is near to the polling centers, mostly police and intelligence forces will be deployed. In the distance of 3,000 to 5,000 meters, Afghan National Army will be stationed, and in the third security belt the police, National Directorate of Security and ANA will jointly have mobilized patrols and will be stationed there,” interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish said.

“Defense ministry is committed to maintaining security on Saturday (election day) and we assure all our people to go to polling centers without any fear,” defense ministry spokesman Ghafoor Ahmad Jawed said.

Interior ministry's counter narcotics department meanwhile said they have seized 49 AK47s that were being transferred to Kabul by armed groups to disrupt elections in Kabul on Saturday.

“It is mostly believed that the armed anti-government groups want to disrupt elections security with the weapons we have seized,” deputy interior minister for counter narcotics Abdul Khalil Bakhtiar said.

Ministry of interior on Saturday said they will deploy over 50,000 security forces to 5,100 polling centers across the country to maintain elections security.
