Women’s Voter Registration Turnout Low In Helmand

Latest statistics by the Independent Election Commission (IEC) show that so far more than 27,000 women have registered to vote in parliamentary and districts councils’ elections in the volatile Helmand province.

Gereshk is in the top of the list with 4,000 women registered so far, the statistics show.

The statistics indicate that from 207,886 people registered in the province, 27,184 of them are women.

Helmand women said they want to elect a good leader and a representative through elections.

“We register to vote so that we can have a better representative who will serve the people,” said Khatima, a resident of Gereshk district.

“My demand from other women is that they should vote for a good candidate and meanwhile they should take part in the voter registration process,” said Laila, a resident of Helmand.

The IEC officials in Helmand said there are some reasons which have affected the voter registration process in the southern province.

“Women’s turnout is generally low. Women should widely participate in this process. The main problem is insecurity and a traditional society,” said Ahmad Shah Sahibzada, head of the election commission in Helmand.

Meanwhile, Helmand governor Yasin Khan said military operations will be held in insecure parts of the province to prepare them for the electoral process.

“Security is good in areas where the voter registration process is ongoing. More parts will become safe until the elections begin,” he said.

The IEC statistics show that 5,249,882 individuals have registered to vote so far across the country from which 1,685,657 are women, 3,463,871 are men, 99,830 are Kuchis and 520 are from Hindus and Sikhs residents of Afghanistan.
