GOFTMAN: Nawroz Discussed

This episode of Gofman is dedicated to Nawroz celebrations.

Nawroz, also known as the Persian new year, is celebrated by people from diverse ethno-linguistic communities and has been celebrated for over 3,000 years in Western Asia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Black Sea Basin, and the Balkans.

Nawroz is the day of the vernal equinox – or spring equinox - and marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. It marks the first day of the first month in the Persian calendar and it usually occurs on March 21.

The moment the sun crosses the celestial equator and equalizes, night and day is calculated exactly every year, and families gather together to observe the rituals.

In this episode of the program host Partaw Naderi discusses the topic with the following guests:

Dawood Muradian, head of Afghanistan Institute for Strategic Studies
Najibullah Manali, writer and researcher
Reza Maleki, Cultural Attaché at Iran's Embassy in Kabul
Sharafuddin Imam, Tajikistan Ambassador in Afghanistan
