GOFTMAN: Parliamentary And District Council Elections Discussed

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday announced October 20 as the date for the country’s parliamentary and district council elections.

This comes after the Afghan government and its financial donors pledged to help the election management body conduct the long-delayed process.

According to IEC officials, the lack of budget, and constant delays around appointing an IEC commissioner were among key reasons for the delay in elections.

The IEC initially announced July 7 as the date for the elections.

In this episode of Goftman, host Partaw Naderi looks into what the IEC still needs to do in order to hold elections; at whether it is possible for elections to be carried out in all districts in the country; and what the IEC has already achieved in terms of holding the polls.

Discussing the issue with Naderi in the studio are the following guests:

•    Wasima Badghisi, IEC operational deputy chairperson
•    Murad Ali Murad, senior deputy minister of the interior for security
•    Fazel Ahmad Manawi, former head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC)
•    Abdullah Ahmadzai, the Asia Foundation's country representative in Afghanistan
