160 People Killed in Three Months In Nangarhar

Nangarhar provincial health officials said on Monday that in the last three months 160 people have been killed and over 490 wounded in the province in serious security incidents.

According to the officials most of the victims have been civilians – all either killed or wounded in 30 insurgent-related incidents including armed attacks, complex attacks, explosions and criminal incidents.

The officials said that in this time more attacks took place in Nangarhar than in Kabul.

“From these incidents, 650 people killed and wounded were transferred to hospital, of which 160 were dead,” Najib Kamawal, head of Nangarhar health department said.

Nangarhar provincial council officials meanwhile said the sharp increase in civilian fatalities in the province is of serious concern.

Although government and US forces have repeatedly said they have weakened Daesh’s footprint in Nangarhar, by carrying out targeted operations against them, Daesh has claimed most of the recent attacks in the province, officials said.

“This is a big threat and the highest number (of attacks) ever seen in Nangarhar,” said Ajmal Omar, a member of Nangarhar provincial council.

“People’s lives are at risk. When they go somewhere, they cannot come back,” Suhrab Qadir, another council member said.

Officials from the defense and interior ministries however said Daesh has been defeated in Nangarhar – however, a US commander in the east of Afghanistan has said in the past that complex attacks on cities, especially Kabul, were planned in the east, mainly in Nangarhar.

“In all the district where there were threats, the Afghan National Army has launched operations,” the defense ministry’s spokesman Mohammad Radmanish said.

“Daesh and other insurgents in Nangarhar have been hit strongly and now they do not have most of the areas that they had under control in the past,” the interior ministry’s spokesman Najib Danish said.

But there has been a string of deadly attacks in the past few months, including the suicide bombing near the governor’s office on the third day of Eid al-Fitr, the attack on the education department and this week’s complex attack on a midwife training center that lasted over five hours.
