Afghanistan Fights Back Against Pakistan’s Missile Onslaught

Local officials said Pakistan has fired more than 5,000 rockets at Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan in the past six months, forcing hundreds of families to flee.

Officials said many homes have been destroyed in the ongoing attack along the Durand Line – the disputed border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Kunar Governor Wahidullah Kalimzai told TOLOnews that Afghan forces have however started fighting back against Pakistan.

“Afghanistan has shared this issue with Pakistan through diplomatic channels, but we have been ordered to take similar action,” he said.

“Recently, we have taken the same action after they (Pakistani military) shelled rockets (on Afghanistan’s soil) and we have targeted those parts which have targeted Afghanistan.”

The Kunar Police Chief Lieutenant General Juma Gul Himmat said the rocket shelling has displaced more than 300 families.

“Dangam, Nalai, Sarkano, Mrawara, Shultan, Khas Kunar are the districts which have witnessed more than 5,000 rockets from Pakistan during the current solar year. The rocket shelling has resulted in civilian casualties and there are displaced families - more than 300,” he said.

The displaced families have appealed to aid organizations to help them and they have also called on government to find a way to end this onslaught.

“The bordering areas are being attacked which has created problems for many people and families have been displaced from their areas,” said Zahirullah, a resident of Kunar.

“Cross-Durand Line incursions are ongoing. People witness it, but they can do nothing to stop it,” said Wali Gul, a resident of Kunar.

Afghan Defense Ministry said last week that it has ordered the Border Force to respond to Pakistani military aggression in the same way.

“We have ordered all the border forces to respond if anyone fires on them,” Defense Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said.

Pakistan military started shelling eastern parts of Afghanistan six years ago.

Pakistan military claims that they target Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan safe havens in parts of Kunar province.
