AGO Records Soaring Rates of Violence Against Women

The Office of the Attorney General of Afghanistan (AGO) on Monday announced that violence against women in the country has dramatically increased over the past eight months, putting the number of violent crimes against women at almost 1,500 cases.

The AGO’s spokesman said cases related to violence against women has noticeably increased this year compared to a year ago, and that beatings, sexual abuse and harassment are among the incidents women faced during this period.

According to the AGO, over the past eight months, over a thousand cases of violence against women were recorded in the country. The figures include 995 cases of beating, 147 cases of sexual abuse, 115 cases of harassment, 70 cases of murders, 66 cases of attempted suicide and 21 forced marriages.

“Today the access of women to justice in Afghanistan has increased, perhaps the cases of violence which are happening today are not too different from the past, but the thing which is happening today is that justice is prevailing and cases are reported and referred to legal and judicial institutions” said AGO spokesman Jamshid Rasuli.

Last year the AGO had recorded more than 2,000 cases of violence.

“110 cases were referred to the special tribunal for the elimination of violence against women, 25 other cases were closed over the reconciliation which is carried out under article 2 and paragraph 39 of the law on elimination of violence against the women,” said Shazia Yusufi, head of special tribunal for the elimination of violence against women.

Women’s rights activists argue that the majority of cases of violence against women are not processed and that culprits are not brought to justice.
