Barmak Assures The Public Of Security On Election Day

The Minister of Interior Wais Ahmad Barmak on Wednesday said an adequate number of government forces have been deployed across the country to ensure safety around elections on Saturday.

According to the Ministry of Interior, 54,776 members of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) will be deployed to secure 5,070 polling centers ahead of the October 20 elections. There will be 9,540 reserve forces.

Barmak stressed the need for people’s cooperation in election security as according to him, insurgents are trying to disrupt the electoral process.

“We should stand against what the enemy has planned to do and we should stand by security forces and support elections,” Barmak said.

The Minister of Defense, Tariq Shah Bahrami, meanwhile directed the Afghan Army to use everything at their disposal to ensure security on election day.

“The Afghan National Army personnel are responsible for ensuring security of the national process and as a citizen we have the right to cast our vote for our favorite candidate, but we don’t have the right to support a specific candidate,” said Bahrami.

Meanwhile, the Interior Affairs Ministry has handed more than 600 weapons to the Ministry of Defense. The weapons had been seized in recent months by the ministry from those who owned illegal weapons.

The interior minister said these weapons will help to enforce elections security.

“Those powerful men and those individuals who carried PK guns and rockets are no longer seen that often in the city,” said Barmak.

“A large number of the weapons were owned illegally and were seized from illegal armed forces in Kabul city,” said Najib Amani, General Director of Interior Ministry’s counterterrorism department.

The ministry said the institution will no longer tolerate the existence of such weapons in the city.
