Two children were killed and one other was wounded in an IED explosion on Sunday morning in PD4, in Lab-e-Jar area of Kabul city, police confirmed. 

A Kabul police spokesman confirmed the incident and said the children, one boy and two girls, were siblings and had been between nine and 12 years old. 

According to police the children found the IED in a garbage can in Lab-e-Jar. When they picked it up, the explosive device detonated.  

Earlier this year, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) released its civilian casualty report for 2017 – and said over 10,000 civilians were killed in the conflict last year. 

In their report, UNAMA documented that in 2017, 861 children were killed and 2,318 were injured in the conflict.
