Chinese Envoy Lauds Pakistan For Its Afghan Peace Overtures

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Yao Jing told Pakistan media on Tuesday that his country supports Pakistan’s move to assist with the Afghanistan peace process.

Addressing a seminar at Peshawar University on Tuesday, the Chinese envoy said peace in Afghanistan was in the interests of the entire region including China and it could be achieved only through peaceful dialogue, The News International reported.

“It’s our earnest desire to see peace dialogue prove a success,” he said adding: "We do hope that US and Taliban would reach some consensus during the ongoing peace overtures."

He said Pakistan’s sincerity and honesty was visible in the Afghan peace process and added that his government also wanted peace and harmony restored in Afghanistan.

On Tuesday, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmoud Qureshi told Qatar media that he was committed to bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Qureshi said that US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham’s comments last week, while he was in Pakistan, showed that relations between the two countries were improving.

“Those who were pointing fingers at us are now praising us,” he said. They are even speaking about a strategic partnership.

Graham had agreed with Imran Khan that there was no military solution to the Afghan conflict.

Qureshi meanwhile clarified that Pakistan is playing its role but it that it was a shared responsibility.

“We understand that regional countries will have to play their role too in order to resolve the Afghan issue,” he added.

On January 20, Graham said that the United States should replace its transactional relationship with Pakistan with a strategic partnership.

He was addressing a news conference in Islamabad.
