Delawar Says His Detention Was A ‘Conspiracy’

A former Senate advisor and a self-proclaimed businessman, Najibullah Delawar, who was arrested in May on charges of links with terrorists, says the government could not find any evidence against him and that his detention was a conspiracy against him.

Mr. Delawar was released on bail last week after spending 74 days in prison.

According to Ministry of Interior, Mr. Delawar was arrested with “fake number plates, armored vehicles, guns, and many Pakistani ID cards”.

Addressing a press conference in Kabul on Saturday, Mr. Delawar said he was arrested on charges of owning a car which had a fake number plate and that he was released by the Attorney General’s Office.

Senior government officials deemed his arrest as a success and called Mr. Delawar an important figure to militants.

On June 9, the National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib said in an interview with TOLOnews that based on his intelligence information, the deputy leader of the Taliban Sirajuddin Haqqani did not break his fast after he learned about Mr. Delawar’s arrest.

Mr. Mohib added that this was “because Mr. Delawar was an important person to them.

A number of businessmen who appeared at the press conference with Mr. Delawar, warned to stop their investment if the government tries to make such arrests against the business community.

“We call on the Presidential Palace, especially the Supreme Court and the Attorney General’s Office, to take this issue serious. Otherwise, the private sector will not sit calm,” the ACCI deputy head Khan Jan Alkozai said.

The Interior Ministry has said that police handed Mr. Delawar to the judiciary with sufficient evidence and documents.
