A candidate for parliamentary elections from eastern Nangarhar province was killed in Rodat district of the province on Monday evening, local officials confirmed.
The candidate, Hayatullah Khan Rahmani, was also a commander of the local public uprising forces.
Local officials said Rahmani was killed when a suicide bomber targeted him in Rodat district. According to officials, three of Rahmani's family members were also killed and one of his sons was killed.
According to officials, the incident happened when Rahmani was on his way from Kot district to Jalalabad city, the provincial capital.
The Presidential Palace issued a statement and condemned the attack adding that according to religious scholars, killing civilians is against Islamic teachings.
This is not the first time that a parliamentary candidate has been targeted in the country.
In early July the only Sikh candidate Ottar Singh Khalsa was killed in a suicide bombing in Jalalabad city.
