Farah Residents Want More Forces Deployed

Some residents of Anar Dara district in Farah province, in the west of Afghanistan, called on government to deploy more troops to the area to ensure people’s safety.

The demand was made by Anar Dara district residents in a meeting with security officials including Farah governor, provincial police chief and commander of 207 Zafar Military Corps on Friday.

Residents of Anar Dara said this is the first time that government’s high-ranking officials have made a visit to the district.

Two months ago, Taliban carried out a coordinated attack on the district, using heavy weapons. The district fell to the group following the attack but was retaken by government forces after few days. The clashes left one civilian, 11 government forces and former Anar Dara police chief Habibullah Akhundzadadead.

“I owe one and half million AFs and have nothing except a home left by my grandfather,” Azizullah, son of Akhundzada, said.

The residents claimed that the Taliban seized lots of weapons from police headquarters when they overrun the district – two months ago.

“We have asked the people and local officials to complete the security personnel here,” Abdul Rahman, a resident of the district, said.

Noorullah Qaderi, Commander of 207 Zafar Military Corps, vowed to establish a base of the Afghan National Army in the district.

He called on the people to help government in this respect.

“A company of the army will be stationed in Anar Dara and they will be provided all the privileges,” said Qaderi.

Farah Police Chief Fazl Ahmad Shirzad meanwhile said Anar Dara needs more than 90 police force members. He urged the people to encourage their sons to join police lines.

“We have 295 kilometers of shared border with Iran and the enemy’s movements from the other side of the border is high. The district has been attacked from other parts too, but government have always defended this part of Farah,” said Shirzad.
