Foreign Ministry Invalidates Over 4,000 Political Passports

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has invalidated more than 4,000 political passports in the last three years. The passports were issued during former president Hamid Karzai’s government.

“More than 4,000 passports have been invalided by Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the past three years. We will not let any political passport to be held by anyone in contrast to the law,” Sebghat Ahmadi, spokesman of the ministry, told TOLOnews. 

Statistics of the Foreign Ministry show that currently 2,775 political passports are valid of which 1,392 of them have been issued to the ministry’s employees, diplomats and their spouses and 1,382 of them have been issued to high ranking officials from other government departments. 

“All ways to misuse from political passports have been prevented. At the moment, we have 2,775 political passports which are being used and include all departments of government,” Ahmadi said. 

A lawyer meanwhile explained that who has the right to hold a political passport.

“Based on the law, the president and his deputies, the chief executive officer and his deputies, heads of Afghanistan’s political offices in other countries, Afghanistan’s consulates in other countries, Afghanistan’s permanent representative in the United Nations, even their spouses, can obtain political passports,” Abdul Subhan Misbah, a lawyer, told TOLOnews. 

“Those who hold political passports can travel to the countries without applying for a visa,” said Nader Baluch, a senator.  

This comes after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was criticized over issuing political passports to those who are not an employee of government.
