Ghani Missing UNGA Due To ‘Pressing Issues At Home’

The Presidential Palace said on Monday President Ashraf Ghani will not attend the 73rd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) due to problems and issues in the country.

The president’s spokesman Haroon Chakhansuri wrote on his twitter page that Ghani is too busy with issues such as elections and peace and will not be able to attend the general assembly.

“President Ghani decided to skip the UNGA because of critical issues such as elections and the peace process being at stake,” Chakhansuri wrote.

The Presidential Palace’s remarks however come in the wake of media reports, including one by Pajhwok Afghan News, that Ghani canceled his trip because US President Donald Trump refused to meet him on the sidelines of the general assembly.

A number of international affairs analysts meanwhile said Trump is reluctant to meet Ghani because he feels Ghani has not contributed enough to  implement the US’s strategy.

“Trump is unhappy with Ghani, because he has not played a good role in implementing their (US) strategy,” international affairs analyst Omar Safi said.

However, CEO Abdullah Abdullah is in New York to attend the general assembly.

Some other political affairs analysts however said that the CEO’s attendance at the UNGA shows that Ghani and Abdullah are working with each other.

“As (the president) has sent the CEO and acting foreign minister, it shows the trust and cooperation between them,” political affairs analyst Yunus Fakoor said.

The CEO’s office meanwhile said Abdullah will talk at the general assembly about Afghanistan’s security, the elections and the political situation.

“The CEO will share issues on security, politics, fighting insurgency and corruption, transparent elections and the need for regional and international cooperation,” the CEO’s spokesman Omid Maisam said.

The United Nations General Assembly’s main discussions will be held on September 25 and the Afghan delegation will speak on September 26.
