Officials from the Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Wednesday outlined a timeline for parliamentary and district council polls but said this would be confirmed on first of Sawr (April 21).

Once announced, the election calendar will be shared with donor institutions, said the officials.

This comes a day after IEC chief Abdul Badi Sayyad briefed lawmakers in Afghanistan’s Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) on the upcoming parliamentary and district council elections.

“We have finalized the election calendar and the calendar will be made public on April 21,” said Sayyad.

The IEC chief also said on Wednesday they hoped to set May 22 as the date for candidates to file their nomination forms.

However, in a document seen by TOLOnews, based on the electoral calendar, the final list of candidates will be announced on August 4.

The document states the election campaign will kick off on September 28 and will continue until October 17.

Candidates for district council elections will start their campaign on October 3 and continue until October 17.

The list of polling stations will be finalized on June 22. The draw for the order of candidates listed on ballot papers will be carried out on July 26, the document stated.

The printing and supply of ballot papers will start on July 27 and will end on 31 August.

The process of supplying sensitive election material to Kabul will start on August 15 and the process will be completed on September 6.

The process of sending sensitive election materials to provinces will start on September 20 and will continue for fifteen days.

According to the document, no election activities are scheduled for October 18 and 19, but voters will cast their ballots on October 20.

The document also states the election commission will take a month to count votes while the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) will start hearing complaints from November 19.

The IEC’s document stated the commission will announce the final list of parliamentary election results on January 15 and final district council results on February 4.

An IEC document reveals that timelines have already been drawn up for processes in the lead up to elections.
