Junbish Calls For A Jirga To Solve Eshchi-Dostum Issue

The spokesperson for Junbish-e-Milli party, Bashir Ahmad Tayyanj on Friday said the issue between Ahmad Eshchi, former governor of Jawzjan, and General Abdul Rashid Dostum, first vice president, should be resolved through a Jirga.

He added that if the issue continues to be discussed, Dostum’s supporters could lose patience and this may have negative consequences.

“Any word that you use regarding Dostum, you are addressing millions. Millions of people will not sit silent and will take action to protect their reputation and their national symbol. Thus, we are worried if the issue is mentioned and discussed more than this, it may spark reactions in various provinces and in different parts of the country,” he said.

Dostum is the leader of Junbish-e-Milli.

This comes after Eshchi claimed he was beaten up, sexually assaulted and imprisoned on Dostum’s orders recently.

This week he underwent forensic medical tests at the NATO hospital at Bagram airfield and at the Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital in Kabul. However the results of the tests have not yet been released.

Although Junbish called for a Jirga to mediate between Eshchi and Dostum, Eshchi said the issue should be investigated through legal channels.

“When it [the issue] happened on me, thousands of people gathered in front of Dostum’s house to resolve the matter. But he even did not respond to them. Now how do you want to resolve it through a Jirga? We have a government, we have a constitution, we have a parliament and we have a senate,” Eshchi said.

A number of civil society activists meanwhile said Eshchi’s case should be investigated transparently.

“If it is just an accusation, then the person who accused Dostum must be punished. If it really happened, then it should be resolved through judicial centers. This issue is not related only to two persons, but is related to Afghanistan. It is related to the Afghan government’s reputation,” said Ahmad Shah Stanekzai, a civil society activist.

Eshchi says he has been in Kabul for one week, but due to unknown reasons has failed to meet with President Ashraf Ghani or Chief of Executive Officer (CEO), Abdullah Abdullah.
