MPs Urge Ghani to Respect Decisions on Impeachments

In a letter to President Ashraf Ghani, lawmakers in the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) have urged government to honor the recent decision of the house to dismiss ministers.

MPs recently dismissed seven ministers following votes of no confidence against them over the under spending of their development budgets.

But on Monday the lawmakers termed the continuation of work by the sacked ministers a clear violation of the law.

Some MPs also accused government of having failed to deliver on its promises, reiterating that the president has constitutional responsibilities that he must abide by.

Some lawmakers said they foresee a serious show down between the legislative and executive bodies unless government terminates the seven ministers.

"The president leads the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and implements his authorities according to the provisions of the constitution," said MP Abdul Qayoum Sajjadi.

"Those in power, instead of maintaining justice and equality for the nationals of Afghanistan, resort to injustice," said MP Shekiba Hashemi.

"There is a war against poppy cultivation and drug smuggling, we do not see even a sign of good governance and you see the levels that corruption has reached," another lawmaker Fakoor Behishti said.

"If we want to leave a destroyed and devastated Afghanistan to our next generation and our sons, then we should keep silent and remain conservative," said MP Jaffar Mahdavi.

Meanwhile, MP Ramazan Bashardost, said: "You (lawmakers) can even impeach the president with one or two thirds majority as we have two presidents," referring to Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah.

"You (lawmakers) are also authorized to dismiss members of the Supreme Court; if you do not make a deal and are not frightened and if you really demonstrated the will of the nation. If the law is in place, then what does this bureaucracy really mean? You (lawmakers) are actually multiplying the status of the house of representatives to zero for our next generation,"' he added.

These statements come just a week after parliament impeached at least 16 cabinet ministers who failed to spend 70 percent of their development budget. But government disagreed with the impeachment decision and referred the case to the Supreme Court in order for them to interpret the constitution on dismissals of cabinet ministers by parliament.
