Taliban Fighters Attack Army Base In Kandahar, Killing 18

At least 18 service members of the Afghan National Amy (ANA) were killed, 16 wounded and four others were taken hostage after a group of Taliban insurgents attacked an army base in Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province on Thursday night, a security source told TOLOnews on Friday.

The source said the military base is located in Zangitan village in Shah Wali Kot district.

Security forces have not commented on the report so far.

This is the second attack by the Taliban against an army base in Kandahar in the past week.

On Monday, 11 Afghan National Army soldiers were confirmed killed and nine others were wounded in a Taliban attack on a base in Achakzai village in Shah Wali Kot district.

But sources from 205 Atal military corps in Kandahar said almost 20 Taliban insurgents were killed in the attack.

“Kandahar's insecurity is not by accident but there are some elements from within the central government who are working on the process,” Kandahar police chief general Abdul Raziq said on Friday.

“Taliban want to take control of parts of Kandahar and want to destablize Kandahar as they have did with Helmand,” said Hashim Alkozai Senate Defense Commission Chairman.

This is just the latest in a string of army base attacks in the country.

On Thursday the Taliban attacked a base in Maiwand district killing 13 soldiers.

“Taliban have changed their war tactic; in the past they attacked small bases but now they are attacking big bases,” said Mukhtar Ahsan a former military official.
