Security Agencies Under Harsh Criticism Following Kabul Attack

Security agencies, mainly the intelligence apparatus, came under harsh criticism by lawmakers and Kabul residents following a complex attack by the Taliban which disrupted the relative calm of the city on Monday morning.

The residents called on security officials to respond that how the truck full of explosives and the five attackers entered the Pul-e-Mahmood Khan area which is surrounded by the Presidential Palace, the US Embassy and other diplomatic areas.

The Defense Ministry’s logistics center which came under Taliban attack is located near a township, the Gulbarhar Tower, which houses hundreds of families. The attack left over 100 people wounded, among them almost 50 schoolchildren.

“This is not the first time. We have witnessed security forces’ negligence many times in the past. The security officials are responsible for such incidents,” said Jawed Safi, an MP from Kunar.

“It shows that the intelligence agencies are not able to conduct their duties properly,” the deputy speaker of the Senate, Mohammad Alam Izadyar, said.

A former military officer said there is a need for a change in the management of the security agencies.

“There should be a review in the structure of the country’s intelligence agency,” a former commander of the Afghan Air Force, Abdul Wahab Wardak, said.

The attack paralyzed a major part of the downtown Kabul. Residents said such incidents makes them more worried about the future.

“Today’s attack shows the weakness of security agencies. We ask the government to pay more attention in this regard,” said Mahayuddin Mehrzai, a Kabul resident.

“We have not seen any improvements in security. The government is responsible because the intelligence institutions are ‘weak’,” said Suhbatullah, a Kabul resident.

The attack was condemned by President Ghani, former President Hamid Karzai and a number of diplomatic offices in Kabul.

President Ghani said in a statement that the Afghan government carries on the peace efforts based on the Peace Jirga’s decision, but the Taliban once again showed their “nefarious will” for the continuation of the war and killing of civilians.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ministry in a statement condemned Taliban's attack in Kabul and reiterated the Qatari government’s “firm stance” in rejecting “violence and terrorism, regardless of their motives and reasons”.

Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah in a tweet condemned the attack and said: “the Taliban’s terrorist attack near the Football Federation today in Kabul showcases the group’s inherent criminal nature”.

“We will not be deterred by such outrage to pursue and punish the miscreants,” he said.
